You are right, but I am more considering a universal protocol, so that other devices can also input parameters as much as possible.

Without preset memory slots to save all settings (presets which themselves would need discrete codes to activate!), it is a big pain to have different settings for different types of content, and virtually impossible to compare the effect of different settings (for example to compare DV Dark at 150" screen size versus DV Bright/Custom at 100" screen size). Discrete codes would make using the projector far easier especially given the horribly clumsy and unintuitive nested menu trees.
BTW ideally these would be TCP/IP so IR would not be required at all.
